Mapping the Experience 1.1



Mapping the temporal-spatial experience starts with the image of the human eye. The trigger point for all things we see and the spark to our soul. The image captures the moment where the individual ingests for the very first time the object he or she sees. Whether the object is being presented through the web, commercial television or street advertisement. This is the moment where the object enters that spacial time where all things are physically placeless and defy stationary occupancy.


First development upon observation of the desired object is to search for justification of reason to purchase it: necessity or simple treat. An obsessing spinning motion to obtain the object invades us, further demanding ultimate research of what it is we desired at that moment in time. Music, graphics, means of communication or further education are all possibilities of our needs.


At a subsequent moment, research culminates in selection of that special product. However, initial selection only allows us to identify the primary function of the object, there after we are presented with models, color, accessories, and/or applications.


Selection of our product urges us to pursue our Third step - purchasing that object. Purchasing the product will make us travel thousands of miles through the virtual world or a few miles on our urban methods of transportation. Physical or virtual carts bring us a step closer towards fruition and to another level of the placeless space.


Payment and checking of our bill beams us on our path of travel, creating anticipation and persuading us to find resources for tracking the product about to be received. Tracking numbers, code bars and earth circulating satellites permit global positioning of the desired.


Arrival of the chosen object creates a final rush of adrenaline - the extraction from the pristine packaging being as perfectly orchestrated as the the object's manufacture itself.

Eddie: Interesting approach... The experience through the senses - primarily vision - thus mapping the experience. The inclusion of the emotional responses adds a layer to the map. It is possible the mapping of those emotions adds a temporal element as well.

Rick,
The start of the journey for my mapping experience is through the sense that converts what we see everyday to electronic sparks or tha travel as centrifugal forces on our brains. The image reveals the moment the IPOD enters this journey. I am now working on a sequence of images at different stages of the revolution. Ultimately transforming into kinetic energy for product enjoyment. I have not figure out how to do the last part yet.

Nice start. The eye is completely at the center of Apples success. Not only is the gaze of the individual important, but the gaze of the other is essential. Social networking, peer pressure are strong components of the culture of Apple. What is it about looking that is important? What is it about seeing and being seen? Perhaps this the idea in the icon of the bitten apple. If we are looking at the apple, who has taken the bite? There is another, one we don't know, but who is inherently present by the absence of this piece of the apple.

I am not convinced your 3 am graphic is successfully embedded in the overall image. This seems to describe a period free of all distraction, based on physical time, real tiem, not time as created by media, marketing and the like. Your time is yours outside of the fabricated world. That's why waking at 3 am is important; nothing is there to bring on distraction from the outside. It is interiority at its finest; terrifyingly present.

In Un Chein Andelou, the surrelists destroyed concepts of organized time. Their effort was to present an example of how time is experienced within a 15 minute period. It starts with an eye, si all about looking, but is mostly about shocking. It forces us to recon established norms, relations, perceptions with unacceptable verions of the same. One might consider this as a way into commenting on Apples place in today's world. The company that asked us to Think Different, is really asking us to think the same but not let everyone know we are doing so.

Very interesting your reflections about perception and the idea of (and I “modify”) everything starts with the eye!
I not sure, however, to be fully agree with this statement (not that you are doing!) but I mention this, because I think everything start with education.
Education on how we perceive the objects, circumstances and everything else! I have two coworkers that are deaf, an my self being from another country I fins so interesting and extraordinary that the way we perceive everything (yes thru the senses – not only the eye), is so influenced and I want to believe determined by the way they teach us to “perceive”! or we let other teach us to perceive!
In the same way I made a comment to Jaclyn, regarding the “missing connection” problem in my perception I was having from her graphics, I have the same initial reaction with yours. I can certainly understand the intentions and the collage feeling but I still missing the connection between all your elements (how they interact with each other?)
I think you have a great way to suggest all the ideas that “mapping” should / must be, and maybe (just maybe) is how you are “connecting them” that will reinforce their “kinetic energy” you mentioned
I am looking forward to receive your comment so I can understand more where are you coming and were are you going with this, but specially to see more of your work!
